Best Things to See in Portugal

When planning summer holidays, there are certain countries that get overlooked, unfairly perhaps. One is Portugal. Not as popular as its neighbour, Spain, yet just as beautiful, Portugal has many stunning resorts, at affordable prices, offering the perfect holiday destination. Compare suitable hotels in Portugal before you go though, prices vary a lot around the country.

Albufeira beach

The picturesque town of Albufeira, located in the Algarve, is only a short transfer from Faro airport – giving you more time to spend on the beach!

In times of tight budgets, saving money is the name of the game. Summer holidays need not suffer with money-saving extras, such as Gatwick parking, a fantastic way to eliminate the need for expensive taxis.

Just 2½ hours from the UK, with no time difference, Albufeira offers sultry average summer temperatures of 28°c, with an abundance of sun. To cool down, head to the sandy beaches, with plentiful water-sports. The resort offers two main beaches – Fisherman’s beach and Albufeira beach. The latter is more popular; however there are many bars, cafes and restaurants lining each, perfect for a snack or beverage.

The old town is pretty, with its cobbled streets and charming atmosphere. There are many bars, restaurants and shops, and a picturesque square, ideal for a spot of people-watching.

The town has plenty of history, with the remains of a Roman castle. Due to an earthquake in the 1700s, much of the castle was destroyed, however the clock tower remains, Torre de Relógio – a great photo opportunity.

The marina is another destination perfect for a camera moment, with pastel-coloured buildings. There are many shops and restaurants, with delicious sea-food dishes. You can jump on a boat trip, including diving and fishing. Dolphin-watching excursions are popular – keep your eyes peeled! There are half-day, full day, or sunset cruises on offer – explore deserted, sandy coves, dramatic cliffs and rock formations, and of course, a great way to top-up that tan – remember the sun-cream!

Bored of the beach, and prefer adventure? Jeep safari is a fantastic alternative, or maybe horse-riding. The aquapark is a fun way to cool off, and a great day out for the kids. Zoomarine is also an educational and fun day out, with dolphin and sea-lion shows. Both parks are easily reached, with many trips on offer. Of course, this being the Algarve, there’s plenty of facilities for golfers, and Salgados golf is just one.

When you’ve spent the day relaxing, had fun at the water-park or adventure on the high seas, it’s time to sample Albufeira’s varied night-life. For lively, head to São João, home to the famous Strip, lined with bars and restaurants, all bright, neon signs and pumping music. Montechoro is another lively night-life area. Food is varied, and there are both international and local cuisine choices available.

Prefer something a little quieter? The old town offers a more chilled-out alternative, with lots of choice, giving you plenty of chance to unwind.

With so much to see and do, you’ll never be bored, and there are plenty of opportunities to relax – surely the point of a summer holiday! Resort transport is plentiful, cheap and easy, giving you more opportunity to explore. Save a few pounds with Birmingham Airport Parking, if flying from the Midlands, and you’ll have even more spends. Travelling from a regional airport? Don’t worry, Luton Airport Parking is also available, including many others.

Albufeira has everything a summer holiday should have. With its close proximity and varied attractions, why not venture to Portugal this summer?
