Havana is the capital of Cuba, an island country in the Caribbean. It is home to one of the most known writers, Ernest Hemingway. Havana offers lively and vibrant scenarios as the city is bustling with life and you’ll want to experience every bit of it.
1. Have a look at Finca La Vigía (Hemingway’s House)
The North American writer, Ernest Hemingway lived here for 20 years. The tour starts at the La Vigía estate where you’ll be able to find the house where Hemingway once lived. It has been converted to a museum and has been maintained the way Hemingway left it. You won’t be able to inside the house itself but you’ll be able to look at it through the windows and doors. After visiting the house, a stop will be made at Cojimar, the village that was Hemingway’s inspiration for the novel, “The Old Man and The Sea”. The tour ends at Maria Hemingway which is a resort consisting of hotels and a lot of watersports.
2. Visit the animals at the zoo
In Havana, you’ll find zoos such as the Zoológico de La Habana (City of Havana Zoo) and the Zoológico Nacional (National Zoo). The zoo is always a great place to go with children. Food stalls are paramount and the animals are all so amusing to see. In City of Havana Zoo, you can see wild animals such as the rhinocerus, hippopotamus and monkeys. Meanwhile in National Zoo, the animals can be seen roaming around in a place made similar to their natural habitats. As a visitor, you’ll be riding on a special train that will come to a close distance with the animals.
3. Visit the Plaza de la Revolucion
The Plaza de la Revolución is a large square, 72,000 square meters. This was the site where Fidel Castro made his revolutionary speeches. Huge rallies are held here on May 1. You may take an elevator to the top which will cost you approximately 10 CUC. You’ll get an amazing view of Havana and also be able to see the Jose Marti statue that stands at 18 meters. Along with the statue, you can also see Che Guevarra on the Ministry of the Interior Building and the The National Library and the Martí Memorial.
4. Go around the city with Habana Bus Tour
To get to know the city a little better, you might want to get on the double-decker bus that HabanaBusTour offers. The top is open so you’ll be able to see everything. It costs around 5 CUC and it lasts about 24 hours. You can get off the bus at anytime within the 44 stops. Other tours are by a single decker bus at Parque Central which will bring you to a beach at Playas del Este.
5. Eat some Cuban cuisine
Havana offers great food that are suited for different palates. They have many known restaurants such as La Guajira and Coppelia. La Guajira was the setting for the hit-movie “Fresa y Chocolate”. It gives off a comforting and homey feel. You’ll have to reserve as this is often booked full every night. They’re best sellers are honey-mustard chicken and pork medallions in mango sauce. In Coppelia, 5 pesos will get you a bowl full of ice cream. Although cheap, there is a 30 to 40 minute queue. The variety of flavors to choose from is overwhelming along with fresh fruit, pastries and soft drinks.
