If you want to explore a bit, and don’t mind driving – San Francisco is a great option as well. There’s a lot to do and explore around San Francisco before making your way to the park. This was actually the airport I flew into the last time I went to Yosemite.

Once you leave the airport, you’ll be driving through the scenic San Joaquin Valley before heading east into the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The drive is fairly easy, with well-maintained roads and breathtaking views along the way.

As you approach the park, you’ll drive through the Sierra National Forest and pass through several charming small towns. The final stretch of the drive takes you up into the mountains, and you’ll be treated to stunning views of granite cliffs and towering trees. The road into the park can be winding and steep, so it’s important to take your time and drive safely.

From San Francisco International Airport: The drive from San Francisco International Airport to Yosemite National Park takes about 3.5 hours, covering a distance of approximately 180 miles. You’ll start by driving across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and heading east towards the Central Valley. As you leave the city behind, you’ll drive through several small towns and pass by vast agricultural fields.

The closest major city to Yosemite National Park is Mariposa, California, which is located about 35 miles southwest of the park’s entrance. While there are other, smaller cities that are closer in proximity, Mariposa offers a unique experience with its quaint downtown and historic charm.

Mariposa serves as a gateway to Yosemite, offering easy access to the park’s wonders while also providing a relaxing atmosphere to return to after a long day of exploring. Visitors to Mariposa can enjoy local restaurants and shops, historical sites such as the Mariposa Museum and History Center, and outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing. California is an excellent hiking state – one of the best in the US.
